How to create Fake Calligraphy - A step-by-step guide | Written by Brittany Design Boutique

Modern Calligraphy is really ‘in’ right now. There are so many examples of modern calligraphy around these days, and its enticing to want to try your hand at creating your own. Calligraphy looks great for invitations, gives a great twist to birthday cards and looks great overlayed on blog images or Instagram posts. The only downside is it can be expensive and difficult to buy calligraphy nibs, ink and paper, let alone find the time to practice! Whilst I absolutely love calligraphy and encourage everyone and anyone to have a go, I understand that it can be hard to find the motivation to get all the right tools together. So today I am going to show how to create the modern calligraphy effect without the difficult to use nibs and ink, so I introduce to you fake calligraphy! All you need for todays tutorial is a fine liner (or even a biro if you don’t have one of those) and some paper, any regular paper will do! Read on to find out how to create fake modern calligraphy!

STEP ONE: PREPARE YOUR TOOLS (THIS IS NOT HARD!)

Grab a fineliner.

Grab a piece of paper.

You can now tick off step one, it’s that easy.

STEP TWO: WRITE YOUR WORD OR SENTENCE

Write a word or sentence in running writing using your fineliner. Connect the letters in any way you’d like, it doesn’t have to be perfect just yet, just write however you feel!

STEP THREE: MARK IN THE DOWNSTROKES

This is the slightly (hardly) difficult bit. We now need to fill in the downstrokes. A downstroke is anywhere in the word that you moved the pen downwards. If this is difficult, try writing the word again and make note of where the pen moves downwards on the paper.

STEP FOUR: FILL IN THE DOWNSTROKES

Just colour in the downstrokes until they are completely filled in. Your word should start taking shape now, it should look pretty similar to a real calligraphy piece now.

STEP FIVE: ADD IN ANY FLOURISHES AND YOU ARE DONE!

Add in curls, twists, lines, love hearts, doodles, whatever you want. You are pretty free in terms of experimenting with what looks good and what doesn’t! Just remember, practice makes perfect. Just because it doesn’t look like a work of art the first time, doesn’t mean it won’t with more practice! Experiment with different styles and see what works best for you!
